The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a plan of action for the benefit of humanity, the planet and prosperity. They seek to promote peace around the world and thereby increase freedom. There are 17 global goals and 169 sub-goals, which it is recommended that companies and institutions implement in their operations. You can choose specific goals to prioritize or work with them all as a whole.

United Nations member states, including Iceland, have committed to working systematically towards the implementation of the goals. The global goals are integrated and address all aspects of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental.

Festa and the Government's Global Goals Project Board are collaborating on promoting the Global Goals for businesses. The collaboration involves the government and Festa working together on an educational program about the Global Goals for Icelandic companies, municipalities and institutions. Companies can choose different ways to implement the SDGs into their policies and projects. Below you can find various tools and instruments that international organizations have designed to promote the targeted implementation of the goals. There you can access the “SDG Action Manager” from the UN Global Compact, where business units are guided through a process where policies and actions can be linked to the SDGs, as well as offering educational materials at each step.

International reporting standards, guidelines and guidelines such as GRI and UFS (Nasdaq) have also set up incentives, tools and instruments to make it easier for companies to disclose actions in support of the global goals when preparing social reports.

On the government's global goals website, heimsmarkmidin.is, you can access information about the sub-goals that the Icelandic government has prioritized in its work, of which there are 65. On the same website, you can also access all the symbols of the global goals in high resolution and Icelandic translation.

A toolkit on the Global Goals for businesses was published by the Cabinet at the end of 2021. It provides practical steps for implementing the United Nations' Global Goals. Previously, a toolkit had been published on the implementation of the Global Goals by Icelandic municipalities, which sets out five steps intended to guide municipalities in working systematically towards implementing the Global Goals.

Sustainable Development Report tekur árlega saman lista yfir þjóðir heims þar sem þeim er raðað eftir því hvar þau eru stödd þegar kemur að framgangi heimsmarkmiðanna – þann lista má nálgast hér. Þar tróna á toppnum (2022) Finnland, Svíþjóð og Danmörk, Noregur er í 7.sæti en Ísland í 29.sæti.
