Sjálfbærniniðurr Lífeyrissjóðr verzlunarmanna and Play valdar ðður sålsn

The awards for sustainability reports of the year were presented earlier today at a ceremony at Nauthól. This time, an airline and a pension fund were deemed to have published the most notable reports of the year.

The Sustainability Center of Iceland, Stjórnvísi and the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce presented awards for the sustainability report of the year earlier today. This is the fifth time that such awards have been given, and there was a festive atmosphere when representatives of the report publishers accepted the awards. The recognition is given to companies and institutions that publish information about their sustainability in a targeted and high-quality manner.

This time, it was the Icelandic Merchants' Pension Fund and the airline Play that were considered to have published the most notable sustainability reports of 2022, for the operating year 2021.

The reports of the Icelandic Commercial Pension Fund and Fly Play hf. were selected from a record number of nominations, but this time 48 nominations were received, with reports from 33 parties being nominated, which is almost 40% more than those nominated in 2021.

Hnitmiðuð og einlæg framsetning mikilvægra þátta

Starfsemi viðurkenningahafa ársins er afar ólík, þó miklar kröfur og strangt regluverk gildi um starfsemi þeirra beggja. Annars vegar er um að ræða lífeyrissjóð, með yfir 60 ára sögu, sem hefur það hlutverk að tryggja sjóðfélögum sínum lífeyri og hins vegar ungt lággjaldaflugfélag sem leggur sig fram um að bjóða lágt verð til skemmtilegra áfangastaða.

The jury's justification for the year's selection states that the sustainability report of the Icelandic Merchants' Pension Fund is a good example of providing information on sustainability factors in the best possible way, and the report reviews the fund's goals, achievements and actions.

"The information is measurable, comparable and relevant to the fund's operations. The presentation is understandable and the main points are presented in a sincere manner. Pension funds have a huge influence on the Icelandic economy, and it is therefore important that other pension funds follow the information provided by the Commercial Pension Fund as a model."

Jury and newly appointed expert council

The jury for this year was Reynir Smári Atlason, Director of Sustainability at Creditinfo, who chaired the jury, Jóhanna Hlín Auðunsdóttir, Director of Climate and Environment at Landsvirkjun, and Stefán Kári Sveinbjörnsson, Project Manager in Strategy and Sustainability at Isavia.

Reynir Smári Atlason, formaður dómnefndar, segir að mörg íslensk fyrirtæki eigi hrós skilið fyrir vandaða upplýsingagjöf: „Upplýsingagjöf sjálfbærniþátta margra íslenskra fyrirtækja er nú orðin að sömu gæðum og við sjáum hjá þeim sem standa sig best erlendis,“ sagði Reynir Atli Smárason, formaður dómnefndar og útskýrir að þessi fyrirtæki séu betur undirbúin fyrir komandi regluverk og ákall fjárfesta en þau fyrirtæki sem ekki hafa lagt áherslu á slíka upplýsingagjöf.“

The goal of Festa, Stjórnvísir and the Icelandic Chamber of Commerce with the award is, among other things, to promote the use of measurable goals and high-quality disclosure in the field of sustainability. To achieve this, in parallel with the greatly increased number of published sustainability reports, a special expert council was established this time to evaluate all the nominated reports and prepare the work of the jury.

Fagráðið var skipað þremur útskriftar nemendum við Háskólann í Reykjavík en þau hafa öll lokið sérstöku námskeiði með áherslu á sjálfbæran rekstur og upplýsingagjöf, en það eru þau Nikólína Dís Kristjánsdóttir, Ísak Grant og Sara Júlía Baldvinsdóttir. Vísir birti í vikunni áhugavert viðtal við meðlimi fagráðsins og má nálgast það hér: „Stundum verða þessar skýrslur of mikið „sjáið hvað við erum frábær““ – Vísir (visir.is).

Það skiptir okkur máli að sjálfbærni sé hluti af viðskiptamódeli félagsins og þar með hluti af allri ákvarðanatöku

Guðmundur Þ. Þórhallsson, Managing Director, accepted the award on behalf of the Commercial Employees' Pension Fund. Guðmundur said that he accepted the award with pride and that it was a great and good encouragement for the board, managers and all employees of the fund to continue on the same path:

“It requires good cooperation and perseverance to change working methods and accepted practices. When preparing the report, the views of fund members regarding sustainability in the fund's operations were sought, and their strong emphasis on the importance of responsible investments and good governance was evident. With the LV sustainability report, the fund presents to fund members and other stakeholders the policy, goals and results of the pension fund's sustainability journey. Open and informed dialogue with stakeholders is of great importance for robust operations and the fund's adaptation to an ever-changing operating environment.”

On behalf of Play, Birgir Jónsson, CEO, accepted the award. Birgir said that receiving recognition like this in the airline's first few years was a great honor for the company, but also an encouragement:

“It is a great honor and not least an encouragement to receive recognition like this in the airline's first few meters. From day one, PLAY has placed great emphasis on sustainability. It is important to us that sustainability is part of the company's business model and thus part of all decision-making. We have already built a strong foundation and set ourselves lofty goals in this regard. The next steps are to implement and follow up on the goals and key metrics we have set for ourselves. We are embarking on that journey with renewed vigor after receiving this pleasing recognition.”
