Hringrás - verkfærið sem við þurfum?

We attended the world's largest circular economy conference held in Helsinki last week, the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF (WCEF2023), and hosted a side event in collaboration with the Nordic Circular Hotspot. The circular economy is one of Festa's most important projects and has been on the company's agenda since 2019.

Við lítum á viðfangsefni Festu út frá þremur stoðum sjálfbærni: fólk, jörð og hagsæld og hér kemur samantekt af ráðstefnunni út frá því.

Earth

• Kjarninn er þessi: Við munum ekki ná loftslagsmarkmiðum okkar nema færast yfir í hringrásarhagkerfi. Hringrásarhagkerfið er lausn á mörgum umhverfis- og efnahagsvandamálum sem við stöndum frammi fyrir í dag. 
• The linear economy is draining our resources, so it is not enough to simply add a circularity to the business model, we need to replace the linear one.
• Í dag er meira en 90% af tapi líffræðilegs fjölbreytileika vegna þess hvernig við nýtum náttúruauðlindir. Við þurfum að breyta því hvernig við framleiðum, notum og neytum afurða okkar og hringrásarhagkerfið er tól fyrir það.

Prosperity

• It is clear that governments, municipalities, large and small businesses are starting to take the circular economy seriously in many places. We have stopped talking about why we need a circular economy. Now it is just a question of how we move towards full circularity.
• Hringrás eykur skilvirkni og sparnað. Tækifærin eru vannýtt. Fyrirtæki eru því ekki aðeins að færast nær hringrás af umhverfisástæðum, heldur einnig vegna þess að mikilvæg hráefni eru að verða dýrari vegna skorts á þeim. Við erum enn á þeim stað að við tökum auðlindir jarðar, búum til vörur úr þeim sem eiga ekkert framhaldslíf að lokinni notkun. Í hringrásarhagkerfi hugum við ávalt að ferli vörunnar frá upphafi til enda og höldum vörum og auðlindum í hringrás. Þarna aftengjum (e. decouple) við hagvöxt og neyslu. Þessi viðskiptamódel, sem byggja á hringrás, eru til og þau virka, en nú er kominn tími til að fjárfesta enn frekar í þeim og þróa þau. Við vitum um dæmi þar sem breytt framleiðsla yfir í hringrás hjá fyrirtækjum fól í sér aukna hagkvæmni, þótt að upphaflega hafi hringrás ekki verið hið eiginlega markmið. 
• New disclosure laws will make more detailed requirements regarding environmental impacts and circularity in the coming years, but it is clear that the legislator needs to work faster. Then, we need to continue to launch capital into circular solutions.

People

• Hringrásarhagkerfið er til umræðu á heimsvísu. Á WCEF2023 voru komin saman ráðafólk, forstjórar, fræðafólk og sérfræðingar frá öllum heimshornum og hægt er að draga lærdóm frá hringrásarviðskiptamódelum sem hafa þróast til dæmis í ríkjum í Afríku. Á síðustu misserum hafa aðilar frá yfir 40 ríkjum í Afríku komið saman og myndað með sér samvinnu vettvang um hringrásarhagkerfið. Við þurfum að hugsa hnattrænt - en hvert og eitt ríki þarf sínar sérsniðnu hringrásarlausnir. 
• The social aspect of the cycle cannot be forgotten. Just transition is the key word here. When individual industries are in transition, the voices of those who create value need to be heard and taken into account. This was one of the things that was discussed in the context of agriculture, for example. “Nothing about us, without us” is a phrase that is relevant here, but it was also used in the context of young people, who had a powerful presence at an event where we were once again reminded of the importance of promising young people a seat at the table, in preparation and decision-making. #JustTransition
• We need more circular experts. Knowledge of circularity is extremely valuable in the developments that are taking place, in most sectors of society: in companies, institutions and in the political arena.
• If participants at WCEF23 had to choose one word to characterize the conference and the circular economy as a whole, it would be collaboration! Let's break down silos, think holistically and globally. Circularity is the path to a more sustainable society, and the path to circularity is collaboration.
