Heimsmarkmið Sameinuðu þjóðanna um sjálfbæra þróun (The Sustainable Developmental Goals/SDG) eru framkvæmdaáætlun í þágu mannkyns, jarðar og hagsældar. Með henni er leitast við að stuðla að friði um gjörvallan heim og þar með auknu frelsi. Heimsmarkmiðin eru 17 talsins og þeim fylgja 169 undirmarkmið, mælt er með því að fyrirtæki og stofnanir innleiða þau í starfsemi sína. Hægt er að velja sér ákveðin markmið til að setja í forgang eða vinna með þau öll sem heild.

The member states of the United Nations, including Iceland, have committed to work systematically towards the implementation of the goals. The global goals are integrated and address all aspects of sustainable development; the economic, social and environmental.

There is a collaboration between Festa and the government's Project Board on the Global Goals to promote the global goals to the business world. A toolbox on the global goals for companies was published by the Government Council at the end of 2021. It provides practical steps for implementing the United Nations' global goals. A toolkit on the implementation of the global goals by Icelandic municipalities had previously been published, which sets out five steps intended to guide local authorities in working systematically towards the implementation of the global goals.

The Sustainable Development Report annually compiles a list of the nations of the world, where they are ranked according to where they are when it comes to the progress of the global goals - that list can be accessed here. Finland, Sweden and Denmark reign supreme there (2022), Norway is in 7th place and Iceland is in 29th place.
